Using PowerPoint Themes And Applying Custom Colours

PowerPoint comes with a built-in set of themes that give your presentation a professional look and feel. The themes are also modifiable to suit your individual tastes, and you can apply themes to slides individually, or to all slides in a presentation.

To apply a theme, select the Design tab. Pull down the Themes list to display the collection of available themes. Select the theme you want to apply and it will be applied to all themes in a presentation. If you want to apply the theme only to certain slides, select the slides you want to affect, right-click on the desired theme and select Apply to Selected Slides from the contextual menu.

Although PowerPoint's themes are pre-defined, they are also customisable. You can change the theme colours by clicking the Design tab. Select Theme Colours. This will bring up a palette of pre-defined colour schemes. Each colour palette has a set of eight colours that will be applied to the background, text and accents like bullet points and chart items. Choose the palette you want to use and click it to apply the colours to all slides in your presentation. If you want to apply the new colours to a few slides only, select the slides you want to affect, right-click on the new colour palette and choose Apply to Selected Slides from the contextual menu.

If you want to apply custom colours to a theme, you can create your own colour palette. Choose the Design tab and select Theme Colours. Choose Create New Theme Colours. A dialogue box will appear and will allow you to select colours individually for your backgrounds, text and accents. Additionally, you can choose colours for hyperlinks and visited hyperlinks. When you have selected the colours for your theme, give your theme a unique name and click Save.
